One of our goals here at CPAS is to increase youth participation in physical activity, hopefully leading children to develop lifetime habits of exercise and participation in physical activity. This article from a newspaper in Calgary, Alberta tackles an issue that families and youth are constantly facing. For some, participation in youth sport isn’t fulfilling its purpose, to provide children opportunities to find joy in participation in sport and to learn important values and life skills that are best taught by being a member of a team.

For many kids, being on a sports team isn’t an enjoyable experience. This can be a result of many factors, and all of them are unacceptable. If you as a parent or coach see that your kids are starting to show disinterest in their sport or their team, take the time to figure out why they aren’t enjoying their sport, and find a way to help them find more joy or pull them out and help them find their passion in some other aspect of physical activity. The repercussions of ignoring the problem or forcing children to play a sport they don’t like could lead to a lifetime of inactivity and poor health, or worse. Please help your kids find activities they enjoy doing and help them start a lifetime of proper health and fulfillment early.
